CHANGE OF PICNIC SITE
The SAHC spring picnic has been moved to the Whitetail campground. Whitetail is at Milepost 20 on the Catalina Highway, one mile past the Palisades ranger station on the same side of the road. Serving time remains at 2:00 PM. There is no change to scheduled hikes on the day of the picnic. Due to limited parking, if you are not hiking, please meet at PAW between 12:30 and 1:00 and arrange car pooling with whomever happens to be there.

Steve's Favorite Hike trip report

Hike cancellation

Due to a scheduling conflict the hike scheduled by Brian & Bev Larson to Mt. It is only necessary at the present time to log in if you wish to download a SAHC PDF Bulletin, view the Membership Directory, the Registry or post in the forum section.

At the present time logging in to schedule a hike or post hike results is not necessary.

These links are on the home page under the General Membership menu on the left side. To log in one must first create a user account which is available to current SAHC members only.

SAHC Fundraising Opportunity

Many of you have seen, or even complained, about the trash in the Huachuca Mountains as a result of illegal border crossings. Now here's an opportunity to do something about it and earn money for the SAHC along the way.

I recently participated in a UDA trash pickup near Carr Peak that was coordinated by Cochise County. I went with the expectation that it was simply a volunteer event. However, during the outing I learned that the County has federal grant money available to non-profit organizations, such as hiking clubs, to the tune of $125 per member participating in the cleanup. For example, if we could get just eight "volunteers" from the SAHC to attend one of these pickups, we could earn $1000 for the club's coffer!

The trash cleanup was not so much dirty work as hard work in that full bags of trash had to be hauled to a central pickup point or back to the trail head. Nonetheless, the outing was fun in a way and definitely very rewarding. Cochise County does supply gloves and super-heavy duty trash bags. If you want to see photos of what's involved, look here:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TucsonHikers/message/822

Cochise County has been advised that the SAHC is interested in participating in future cleanups and, although preference is given to local organizations, they will keep our club in mind. Since most cleanups are arranged on just 10-14 days notice, we won't be able to announce a trash pickup event in the Bulletin. Therefore, if you are interested in participating, please send an email to whbens@hotmail.com and I will add you to a SAHC notification list. Those without email may call me at 648-7468. Let's see if we can earn some money for the club and spruce-up the Huachucas in the process!

Sure, the mornings are much cooler, but that sun is still very warm during the middle of the day. Is that global warming or just a bad memory? Either way, this is still one of my favorite times of year.

Another way I know it’s November is by the number of hikes that suddenly appear in The Bulletin. The number of hiking options typically jumps from 15 to 20 per week to 30 or more hikes per week. Amazing!

A third way I know November has arrived is that our total membership numbers typically drop this month. If you’re reading this in a borrowed Bulletin or perhaps on the club website because you didn’t receive your new Bulletin, you may have forgotten to renew your membership last month. It’s not too late, though. Log onto the website (www.sahcinfo.org) or fill out the application in this edition and continue your membership!

Later this month we’ll celebrate Thanksgiving, with all of the festivities that the holiday calls for. A bit of overindulgence of various kinds will also be on the agenda for many people. Just remember to actually think about all those things for which you’re thankful as you enjoy yourself!

Now, to make sure you have something to be thankful for, I’m going to cut my message short and stop right here.

Keep on hiking!

About fifty people participated in the various hikes, and there were about 70 or so at the picnic.

In the race for King & Queen of the Mountain, Joel Woppert was recrowned as King with a time a whole minute slower than last year's, and Pam Hoyt was presented with her crown for the fastest women's time up Mount Wrightson. Congratulations!

Thanks to all who participated today, and special thanks to the guides and all of the other volunteers who made it all happen today.

Saguaro National Park Draft General Management Plan / Environmental Impact Statement

SAGU NP is in the process of finalizing their General Management Plan,
which will guide park management for the next 15 to 20 years.

Jim Terlep, SAHC Access Trails Coordinator and Steve Singkofer,
SAHC President attended an informal meeting on Thursday,
September 6th at Pima Community College East Campus.
They spoke with several local rangers and several National Park
planners from the Denver area, all of whom will be instrumental
in finalizing this draft plan.

The officials with whom Jim and Steve spoke asked for substantive
input from our members. They all agreed that public participation is very
important to the successful development of this management plan,
and they are asking for our thoughtful evaluation and comments.
While they will accept simple concurrence or disagreement with
one or the other of the offered plans, they would prefer to also
know the reasons why you concur or disagree with their plans.

The board is in the process of formulating SAHCs official response,
but all of our members are invited to provide their own personal input
to the Park Service. Please use the link(s) to review the Draft General
Management Plan and to submit your comments online.

Thank you.
