What is an eHike, you ask? An eHike, in general, is a hike conducted by an approved guide who posted the hike on the SAHC website a few days before the actual event. More...

I haven't seen Art in a quite a while, but when I was younger and stronger we did a lot of great hikes together. That was in the days when we would go down to the Santa Ritas and knock off 4 or 5 peaks in one day. He was one strong hiker and a lot of fun to be with.

Remembering Art Wells

Like many other hikers who learned of Art's passing thru the SAHC bulletin, I wanted to join them in expressing my sympathy to the family and friends of Art Wells. Art helped many hikers in the club and I wanted to thank him for helping me obtain some of the remote Coronado 12 peaks. Since Art and I both had the same vintage Chevy trucks, he gave me free, a Firestone Wilderness tire, a spare he didn't need. Thank you Art, it is still on my truck, and as I go rolling along, I can look back and remember the day you gave it to me. He was good at remembering record times for peaks like Mt. Wrightson and could quote many times and the record holder. Art was fast and had strong long legs, not to much unlike Abe Lincoln. Well, best of all, no more suffering or no more allergies. All the club hikers will miss Art Wells.

With respect,
Roger Carter

A Tribute to Art Wells

I am much saddened by the passing of Art Wells, a great loss for his family and for the Southern Arizona Hiking Club.  Art was a very strong & a very talented hiker and a good, dedicated hiking guide.  He was also the best four-wheel driver in the Club.

Art loved peakbagging and he helped many peakbaggers by putting peaks in the Bulletin that they needed for peakbagging awards.  I climbed many peaks with Art over the years.  Several years ago,  we climbed Darnell & Pothole Peaks from Sulphur Draw, and  --in just this one bushwhack-- Art completely destroyed a brand new pair of hiking boots.  Art returned them to the store the next day for a refund!

Art also liked to carcamp and he preferred to sleep in his vehicle, but he would not rest
(literally) until he had his SUV perfectly level, front to back, left to right!  In these carcamps
in the evening Art would spare no effort to get up a roaring campfire, and next morning he would always douse the smouldering ashes, first with water, then with dirt.

Those who knew Art quite well shall always remember his stories about "outgassing" his new
SUVs before he would drive them.  For those among us who might have missed it, Art Wells
was an Arizona original. Without Art's contribution of his time & energy,  the Southern
Arizona Hiking Club would not be the great hiking club that it is!

If I could speak to him right now,  I would say: "Art, you will be sorely missed."
AND he will.

MOUNT LEMMON -UPDATE- Rescue crews have reached a rock climber trapped by a bee swarm.

According to Search and Rescue crews on the scene at Mount Lemmon, a group of climbers encountered a bees' nest late Tuesday afternoon. The bees swarmed and some of the climbers managed to escape, but one climber's equipment malfunctioned and he became trapped in the swarm. The climbers that escaped received hundreds of bee stings and have been taken to a local hospital.

The bees continued to swarm for hours, crews were unable to reach the man until a helicopter was brought in to disperse the bees. Around 9:15pm crews were able to reach the man. They say it will take at least and hour to get him down safely. It is unclear how many stings he's suffered.

Art was a great hiker and he had time to do it. He took me to a lot of places that I would not been able to get to myself like Wrong Mt. Sorry to learn of his passing.
