Once
again, while it's a hot Labor Day weekend in Tucson, we’ll be able to have a
group backpack up to the cool pine forest at Manning Camp (Sept 4-7). We’ll clear and maintain trail, cut firewood
and take care of other camp chores for the National Park Service. As NPS volunteers, we get to hike up from the
Madrona entrance (9-1/2 miles, 4500’ one way) and use the NPS kitchen in the old
Manning cabin. The NPS will also provide
food, tents, water filters and a couple of their fun-loving trail crew. For information, inquire with your SAHC
member number to zaino ‘at’ att.net.

Description:
This 5 day backpack will start and finish in Happy Valley, with the goals of
bagging 6 peaks and spending some of the summer in the near-by high country.
There will be 3 days of carrying a pack a total of 21 miles up and down 5000
feet. Also, 3 of the days will include hiking a total of 30 miles up and down
8000 feet. Manning Camp is the only guaranteed water source, so we will start
by carrying 2 days of water. A challenging trip, but the sense of
accomplishment will be great.
