Centella Point Hike Cancelled

Posted May 20, 2011

Centella point on Wed. May 25th is cancelled due to fire.

MT. LEMMON - Expert hikers, take note. The grueling Green Mountain Trail awaits you.

The trail has two starting points on Mt. Lemmon; the first being at San Pedro Vista and the other at General Hitchcock Campground.

If you start at the San Pedro Vista, you'll quickly find out this isn't a hike for beginners. Hiker Nolan Montufor said, "Every time I feel a lot of energy expensed, but I do enjoy the ruggedness".

Rugged this trail is, with several switchbacks that are narrow at times. Adding a degree of difficulty is remnants of Old Man Winter.

Only in Arizona can you be hiking in shorts and dashing through the snow, and that's exactly what you'll find in the shaded areas of this trail. You probably won't need the jacket, but you will need to watch your footing.

Hiker Lalita Malik said, "You don't need snow shoes on snow like this, but you do need some traction. Microspikes is what I recommend".

From snow to sweet rock formations and stunning views, the Green Mountain Trail has it all. "One of the things I noticed down there was the valley, which was a lake. Hard to imagine that was a lake once upon a time", said Malik.

Doing the entire 3.9 mile length of the trail will take about 4 to 5 hours.

Thimble Peak

Posted March 19, 2011

Well named, Thimble Peak looks a lot like a giant sewing thimble placed high on the big ridge that separates Sabino and Bear Canyons in the Santa Catalina Mountains north of Tucson. Thimble occupies a prominent position, and once recognized can be seen from most places in Tucson as well as from some sections of the Mt. Lemmon Highway. None the less, Thimble’s summit is not often visited. No trails reach the peak, it is guarded by tall cliffs on many sides, and reaching the true summit requires a few sections of rock climbing.

Golden Gate Mountain Trip Report

Posted February 6, 2011

by Bill Bens

On Saturday I joined the Southern Arizona Hiking Club (SAHC) for a bushwhack up Golden Gate Mountain in Tucson Mountain Park.  Golden Gate is thought to be the most filmed mountain in western movies as it is the towering backdrop to Old Tucson Studios where many westerns were filmed. After meeting on the west side of Tucson, our group of 22 car pooled to the Yetman Trail head just below Gates Pass where we began our short but step trek up Golden Gate Mountain. Here's the view from the trail head:

From the parking lot, we headed south on the Yetman Trail about a half mile up to a low saddle: More...
